Default What to look for in BGP status

    Hello Guys!

I am a bit new on BGP routing and figured I could get some help here, as I am suddenly finding myself administrating a check point firewall doing BGP.

What I am looking for is what I should check for to make sure its all up and running without issues.

    For example:
    SLU-FW01.dummycompany.com> show bgp peers

    Flags: R - Peer restarted, W - Waiting for End-Of-RIB from Peer

PeerID AS Routes ActRts State InUpds OutUpds Uptime
    215.120.172.229 2057 1 1 Established 3 1 5w5d
    215.120.172.230 2057 1 0 Established 1 1 4w4d

    SLU-FW02.dummycompany.com> show bgp peers

    Flags: R - Peer restarted, W - Waiting for End-Of-RIB from Peer

PeerID AS Routes ActRts State InUpds OutUpds Uptime
    215.120.172.229 2057 0 0 Idle 0 0 00:00:00
    215.120.172.230 2057 0 0 Idle 0 0 00:00:00

So here I guess that I should look for either a state of "Established" or "Idle". Is there any more states that are acceptable?
Is there any other command that I should use to check status?

Anything besides established is basically bad. Other good commands are show bgp peer $ip advertised routes and received routes. Syntax isn't right, but you should be able to find it. BGP is a beast. Start calling subnets prefixes and make sure you understand that advertising x/24 will not include a route in x/23 or less.

Also know how to turn on debugs. something like set trace bgp all on. logs go to /var/log/routed.log. If routed crashes its core file will go to /var/log/dump/usermode.

Only the active member talks bgp the standby doesn't do anything.

Routes dynamic routes are synced over the sync interface via tcp 2010. Used to be called fibmgr, but i think its just routed now.

If you have a problem make sure you turn on tracing before rebooting or doing anything else otherwise support is just going to tell you how to do it and you'll have to wait for the next issue.
