While I don't think we've posted something on, say, checkpoint.com, I know our PR folks have been talking to various media outlets that have covered this.

The short answer is that the underlying problem was corrected on Monday morning US time. Due to DNS caching/propagation delays, you may still be getting redirected elsewhere in your part of the Internet.

After rising for weeks, their stock price was at $64.77 on Monday. Since the outage, it's been falling steadily and closed today at $63.07, down 2.6% since Monday, representing a $340,000,000 loss in market capitalization. It's hard to say how much of this is due to this problem.

One of the requirements of owning a domain name is that you provide them with a current e-mail address. It wasn't an "e-mail snafu", it was just inattention. A few weeks ago I noticed that their domain name was set to expire soon and I was wondering why they were letting it go down to the wire. As a courtesy, I would have told them about it, but it didn't seem like the kind of message they would have been welcome to hear, especially from someone outside the company.

If I had been online when it went down and I would have immediately called their registrar and given them a credit card number to at least get them back online.

Anyway, a $340,000,000 loss of market capitalization is pretty serious. They've probably learned their lesson. I see they've renewed it for four years now. Let's see what happens then!

That is nowhere as bad as what I saw over on [URL="http://www.verisign.com[/URL]. The whizbangs at Symantec have decided to replace all of those "VeriSign Trusted" check marks with "Norton Secured" check marks this month.

I almost wretched all over my desk.
