Default How much mileage in CCSE Plus?

I recently passed 156-315.65. I have the courseware for 156-515.65 but I am wondering if I would be better off switching my attention to R70 and taking the accelerated CCSE exam (156-915.70). And a quick perusal of job adverts hasn't thrown up any specifically requiring the Plus variant.

Practical experience is the best teacher. Are you trying to score an entry level job with some certs, or do you have experience with the products?

I am an old lag with years of experience who thought it was about time I got some certificates! Also my company likes to have something fresh in the training plan each year, hence my thought about R70 for 2010. And of course one always likes to introduce market values to the annual pay review...

If you're trying to make yourself more marketable, you can also work on Provider-1 and VSX certs. It's an entire new world and a lot to learn.

MSPs, banks and other large (well paying) organizations use these products.

From what I see in the northeast, I'd go in this order today

    CCSE - R70
    P-1
    Endpoint or VSX

and of course CCLE is always needed.

here is my 2c on this, because I have them :-)

    CCSA/CCSE
    CCSE+
    CCMSE
Cisco CCIE R&S/Security/Voice (I have Security but no voice)
Juniper JNCIP/JNCIE (I do not have these)
    CISSP

The more knowledge you have about these products, you will ALWAYS have a job in ANY environment, even if the unemployment is at 25%. Having these certs prove to employers that you have the skill to do the job. Having higher salaries because of these certs is an added bonus, IMHO.

    my 2c.

I would say that if you're serious about being a Check Point Engineer, go ahead and knock out the CCSE Plus next. It's good stuff, and I think that you could actually use it to differentiate yourself from the plethora of cert freaks who have the CCSE just cuz.

R70 might make sense, but because there are still boatloads of companies who haven't migrated yet, it's not a super huge issue. My list would be:

    1. CCSE Plus
    2. Provider-1
    3. VSX OR R70 CCSE

Where you basically decide based on what environments you're looking to work in. If you want to go to the big leagues, Provider-1 is really important. VSX is becoming more of a factor too. For more mid-size shops, you want to push R70 to the forefront and push Provider-1 back along with VSX.

I took CCSE + and it has not really meant loads of job offers. I find my JNCIS-FWV has been better for that. However, I do think you actually learn something uiseful when you study the material for the plus exam so for that reason alone, if you work with CP take it.

This doesn't surprise me. The pool of CCSE+ certified people is simply too few to get that kind of visibility. It's not until a technically oriented hiring manager, *with CP knowledge*, sees your resume that it's going to mean anything.

Thus, I highly recommend to anyone with CCSE+ that if you're applying for a position that requires lots of Check Point knowledge, you could include this with a description in your cover letter or put it in the highlights section of your resume. Off the top of my head, I would write something like this:

One of the few Check Point engineers who successfully achieved the advanced and coveted CCSE+ certification, which focuses on complex features, troubleshooting, and under-the-hood product knowledge. (You may even enter a link to the Check Point cert page.)

So, what I'm saying is, listing the five chars in your cert line isn't going to be sufficient. You need to create an interest/desire for not just your average engineer, but convey the idea that "this candidate comes with the differentiation of a cert that none of our current employees have managed to achieve yet."
