Is there any way to check for SD updates (not initiate installation of) via the CLI (NGX R65 SPLAT 2.4)?

I want to have the SCS check for updates, and email me if there are any.

I'm going to resurrect this to see if anyone knows how to do this on R70.30 now. Any takers?

The checking for and downloading of IPS updates function appears to be driven from the SmartDashboard application in R70 (it checks for and downloads the updates) so I don't think you're going to find a command on the Security Management Server that will give you that information. The sduu program on the SCS integrates the newly downloaded updates into your SCS config if that helps.

Check Point used to have a mailing list that does exactly what you want as seen here from the old SmartDefense FAQ:

- How do I receive notifications about new advisories?
- A mailing list that provides information about new updates and advisories is available to the general public.
- To register to the mailing list, send email to
LISTSERV at AMADEUS.US.CHECKPOINT.COM with the command
“SUBSCRIBE SMARTDEFENSE-NEWS” in the email body.

However this list seems to have disappeared. Anyone from Check Point know where the email notification list for SmartDefense/IPS updates went?

Actually that list still exists. I still get email from it and it's described here:

IPS Security Updates Archive (http://www.checkpoint.com/defense/advisories/public/security-updates-archive/index.html)

There's also an RSS feed for it (if you're so inclined):
