Default Whats the difference between versions R55, R55P, R55W?

Whats the difference between versions R55, R55P, R55W? They all have different HFA's. At least with NGX they choice Power or UTM. I am still trying to figure out what UTM means.

I "think"

R55 is the plain R55
R55P is the IPSO version (Nokia)
R55W is the Web verion

The W stuff was merged in to the "plain" version when NGX was released , more smardefence ??

Pretty close, as I recall.

R55 is the main version. It works on all supported operating systems.

R55P was a special version that only runs on IPSO 3.8 variants.

R55W does have improved SmartDefense, but it seems to have been lightly adopted. It was an interim version developed for a few major customers that could not wait for NGX for some reason. It did things like block peer-to-peer traffic on any port as opposed to plain old R55, which could only block it on known ports.

AFAIK, R55W was the R55 version with WebIntelligence. TBH this was a pain because of patches, etc. You need a special SmartCenter as well or to apply a patch to make it compatible.

Fortunately now it's just one flavor again.

Regarding UTM, it stands for Unified Threat Management, which is a grand way of saying all-in-one gateway. The idea being, having firewall, IDS/IPS and content security in a single box.

So you will usually get:
- Firewall & VPN
- Anti-virus
- IPS
- URL filtering
- anti-spam

Most vendors also pitch anti-spyware, anti-phishing, etc, which AVs and URL filters do anyway.

One thing to remember is that, while it's cheaper, easier to manage, etc, it also tends to be less powerful and for instance IPS tends to be a subset of what a "proper" IPS will be.

They are great for SMEs and remote branches basically.

If fw ver doesn't show you anything, it means that you don't have HFA installed.
It is recommended to have the latest HFA installed (in most of the cases).
