Installing CP Manager on Solaris 10

Hi There,

I have been installing CP Manager on Windows and would like to explore installing on Solaris. Can someone please guide me through the steps? I'm more intrested in how the Solaris box should be built (i.e space allocation for /var/log etc)

Also, any suggestions on how to build a Solaris box for Provider-1

P.s I have never installed Solaris before but am fairly confient in using it so this should be a good learnng curve :-)

I think most people here tend to be using SPLAT rather then Solaris now.
I know we certainly use SPLAT rather then Solaris for our Provider-1

Let's get our terms right here. Do you mean:

1. The Solaris motif based GUI; or,
2. SmartCenter for Solaris?

The motif based GUI doesn't require any special partitioning because it's an endpoint application for administering CheckPoint.

If you mean the the SMC, then I'm not sure. I know there used to be docs suggesting specific things for the Solaris enforcement points. What else is going to be running on this thing? Or, will it be dedicated?

In general, I can say that the /var and the /opt slices should be nice and large. If you can confirm some of this stuff, I might be able to hunt something down for you.

I used to work for a Security Service Provider, MSSP, and we run
our Provider-1 on Solaris 9 platforms, and that it was a pain in the
ass to manage this beast. Sun comes out with patches and when
you applied patches to the servers, it breaks Provider-1. What
you end up with is blame game between checkpoint and Sun.
It is not worth the trouble to run P-1 on Solaris in my opinion.
You will be better off with Provider-1 on Secureplatform, especially
for training. You practically can install Provider-1 on Vmware or
on a personal laptop and it will work just fine.

However, if you decide to be to run Provider-1 on solaris, just
be aware that when you run mds_setup, it may fail because
some of the sun patches are not compatible with Checkpoint
software. I've run into countless issues with this when installing
NG Feature Pack 3 and NG AI R55 on solaris 9 because of stupid
solaris 9 patches.
