IRC and NAT Most IRC servers used something called ident to try and identify the remote server, which involves querying the machine making a connection. In the case of a HIDE Address Translation, it usually means the server is attempting to query the firewall. Most firewall administrators do not allow attempts to connect to the firewall directly (with good reason).
My general strategy for dealing with ident is outlined in this faq:
What Is Ident However, most IRC servers that do ident requests require a valid ident reply or they will not let you in. In this case, the only thing you can do is to run an identd proxy on your firewall machine or use IRC servers that do not require ident. Unforutnately, I don't know of any.
