Default OS Detection for multiple machines

I'm looking for a utility that will display (or report) the OS of machines based on a subnet. Something like the uptime.exe utility that comes with the windows resource kit but able to hit numerous machines. I'm looking for an input/output similar to this:

C:\>osdetect 10.0.0.0/24
10.0.0.1 Windows 2003 Service Pack 1
10.0.0.2 Windows 2000 Service Pack 4
10.0.0.3 Windows XP Service Pack 3 (Beta)
10.0.0.4 Windows 2003 R2 Service Pack 2
10.0.0.5 Linux 2.6.21 (Ubuntu 7.10)
10.0.0.6 Windows NT4 Service Pack 6
.
.
. etc

Does such a utility exist? I have used uptime.exe and NMap but thats more of a brute force attempt at detection, as i have admin rights on the network it is much easier and quicker to simply ASK the machines what OS they are than do a port scan.

Hi
Yes there are various softwares available, not only the OS version many other things like hardware in each machine, software running and there version, what ports are opened, also you can block the certain ports also, like CD, USB etc, you can get the inventory of software, hardware also you can update the patches from the server.
Different products like BigFix,McAfee, Websense etc.
Goto there site if you want in detail information and also you can request the demo.

I hope this will help you.
Regards
Ranjit

Which would explain your nmap-like output ;) I don't think you'll find another command line utility that will come as close as nmap does.

As Ranjit mentioned there are several applications that will do this, the ones I would recommend, which are windows-centric, would be SMS or Dameware.
