Default vsmon.exe = High CPU

We are experiencing vsmon.exe running 99% of the CPU resource on a number of older laptop (ones with single cores) for well over 60 minutes. The ones with Dual-Core aren't as bad, 50% on the average, but still workable.

I did a search on this forum and came up empty, I just want to know if anyone else has experience this sort of problem and what did you do to fix it?

System Info:

Dell Latitude D810 (2Ghz w. 1GB of RAM)
Windows XP SP2
Checkpoint Integrity Client 6.5
Symantec Anti-Virus 10.1.5
Cisco VPN 4.5

If you need additional information on the hardware/software, just let me know.

Have you tried disabling Dynamic Execution Prevention in the BIOS ? I have seen this problem even with 6.5.063.166 on the Latitude Series, but I haven't got one of your models here.

Hi Unc,

I see no such feature "DEP - Dynamic Execution Prevention" in the BIOS. I do see a CPU XD Support feature.

Are you certain you're not referring to Windows instead of BIOS?

That's the one. We just gave it a more English sounding name.

Sorry for not explaining.

Again you have not mentioned your Integrity Version.

Cisco client version 4.8.00.0440 is the only supported version for 6.5.
Recommendation installation order is, install Integrity client, then install Cisco Client with the NOVSDATA option.

Here are some additional details regarding the NOVSDATA
1. Uninstall Integrity
2. Uninstall Cisco VPN
3. Run CPClean
Check Point Software: Support & Troubleshooting Tools
4. Disable any Anti-Virus Software then follow the procedures below:
5. install Integrity Client, then
5. Install Cisco VPN w NOVSDATA option

Check Cisco VPN readme file for details.

Integrity version: 6.50.646.000

Are you stating that Cisco VPN 4.0.5 will not work with Integrity 6.5, only VPN 4.8?

Even if that was the case, that process would take weeks, if not, months to complete. I have remote users spread out all over the country and getting them to send their laptops would be like pulling teeths.

Actually, vsmon.exe has been well behaved for the past couple of weeks, Memory usage is down to 32MB and CPU usage is also down. I will keep you posted.

Let me know if I can help. That Cisco client is old. You should probably consider upgrading.

I've just downloaded HFA06 and have deployed it to a few test machines (2Ghz-Dual Core + 2GB of RAM).

Vsmon.exe takes about 5 to 10 minutes of the CPU, but never peg passed 50% mark and Memory consumption is at 87MB, once it's done with it's process, it goes down to about 27MB.

I never had a problem with newer machines, even though, Cisco VPN client 4.0.5 is installed.

Once I get my hands on older laptops, I will test the new client on them. Keep you posted.
