Default Backup Image of Hard Drive?

Hi,

I'm running SPLAT on an Intel P4 plain whitebox and have everything running the way I want. I was wondering if anybody has tried to use Ghost or some other software to create a backup image? I have Ghost 7.5 and am able to create the image but when I try to restore the image onto another hard drive it isn't restoring the boot loader and I'm unable to boot the machine up.

I tried downloading the trial version of Ghost 8.0 to test out before we buy it because I read the article saying that it supports GRUB. But unfortunately the trial will not restore images and that's what we're having problems with. Does anyone know for sure if this will work or any other suggestions? Thank you.

Paul

Why is it that people always want to use imaging software, when there's just no need/reason?

Just use SPLAT's backup facility. Then when you want to restore the box, you just install CP from the CD (about 15-20 minutes), then restore from backup - another 10 minutes. Done.

You could also use the snapshot facility in SPLAT too I guess.

Well I was hoping that if we had a backup of it, we could just pop in the drive, image it, and then walk away and have it ready when I get back. I understand there's a way to back it up using CP, but was hoping for another person that has done this. Thanks anyway.

You need to run grub-install to reinstall the boot loader.

You could possibly get it booted with a rescue CD.

As an example.

Also use the “I think” –IA switch with ghost.

I figured I would have to reinstall the grub. I just didn't know how. Thanks for the link. But I actually got it to work using the -IR switch. It's a lot easier because I can just restore it and walk away for a few minutes. When I get back I just power it up and it's running now. Thanks again.

If you are using symantec ghost you can use :

ghost.exe -IR

this will copy the bits as they are and it will work for you

Please Urgent, does anybody have a ghost raw image (ghost.exe -IR) of the boot manager for a Nokia IP350 that I can burn in a boot partition of a new disk and proceed then with the regular "install" of the IPSO ?
My disk got damage and need to recover on a new blank hard drive.

You'll need to grab it from a spare or something. Otherwise, you have to order it from Nokia.

After I Ghosted MS (SPLAT with R61) during boot time I get message
"Active kernel dump crash subsystem: Failed" It loads MS and it looks like working, but I'm not sure it works correctly or what consciences I may have later.
