Hi, I am installing SPLAT on HP DL 380. I have two pair of mirrored disk: two 70 GB disks & two 300GB disks. I'd to install SPALT + Checkpoint applications on the primary (70 GB) and use the 300 GB to store logs. 1- I'd like to load the partitions so that SPLAt kernel would install on the primary disk (70 GB) and Checkpoint components ( /opt & /var/opt )on the secondary disk (300 GB). The installation process doesn't give the option to do so. 2- I installed SPLAT on the server. Now I am trying to configure the second disk (300 GB) to receive the logs, however, I am not able to see the disk by using the format command. Also I didn't find any command with in SPLAT that is simpler to the format command. Please advice. Thank You

Does anybody know if it is possible to edit your disk partitions at installation for SPLAT? It would be nice if splat was similar to other linux distros that gave the user the option to edit the default partition layout. This would be the best approach for new installations since the disk partitions could be created and /var could be assigned before any CP files are ever written there.

You cannot create additional partitions after the installation of SPLAT. Don't forget that SPLAT is a hardened OS (based on Linux), so there are a lot of limitations. Cheers, Tan |

To me SPLAT is aimed at allowing non-Linux people to get onto a pre-secured OS without having to shell out for appliances such as Nokia. It has been a great boon to me as it allowed me to convince people insisting on Windows Boxes that they could get up an running on a Linux box, as what they were getting really hides the Linux from the administrator, so it removes the fear factor for them. I have even had people comment that they forget that it is running Linux as they hardly have to go to Expert Shell. This way they can get the advantage of an appliance style pre-hardened OS, but using cheaper everyday hardware such as HP/Dell/IBM Servers. I use SPLAT/IPSO most days at work, however I in no way consider myself knowledgeable of UNIX/Linux, and have worked on IPSO for 6.5 years solid. I really appreciate that is a case of insert CD then click, click click and installs. Expert Linux Users will find the limits of SPLAT frustrating as they will want the full Linux experience, however I suspect that Check Point would not distribute for free if was a customisable Linux distro. If you want full Linux then get RHEL as you will have the knowledge to do this. SPLAT isn't aimed at the power Linux users.

I agree with what mcnallym says. If you make SPLAT too customizable you risk users shooting themselves in the foot a lot more. It would be harder to support, etc. People that know Linux can always go for a customized install.

I have to ask, what would you change? SPLAT is sized to what VPN-1 needs with some additional /home space and everything else in /var (mostly for logs).
