Default Checkpoint LAB (VMWARE)

Hello everyone,

This is my 1st post, i am starting my preparation for the CCSA but i want to do it thoroughly but setting up small lab and getting some good hands on.

I downloaded VPN-1 UTM on SecurePlatform R60 from Check Point Software: Check Point VMware Images which is a ready made VMWARE image.

My problem is i cant get it to work on VMWARE think it has something to do with the version I'm using. I tried VMWARE Workstation and also the VMWARE server (the free one you download from VMware: Virtualization, Virtual Machine & Virtual Server Consolidation - VMware) but this also doesnt work and complains about license when you openup the checkpoint image.

Has anyone done this before or does anyone know what version i could use.

Thanks so much,
Werner

License related to your VMware or R60? What is the error message?

Complains about license for VM not R60, but on VMWARE website it says it free version so does not make sense then.

Any ideas?

VMWare is free, but you still need a license for it. On the VMWare website you can get one (or more) by entering your information (name/email address).

Remember that the SPLAT image also needs a license, and that it is much better to install SPLAT yourself for the hands-on experience!

Just to clarify,
VMWARE Server is Free and requires you to register for a license. This allows you to create and modify VMWare images.
VMWare Player is also free and allows you to play existing VMWare images, you cannot however modify or create VMWare images with the player.

I think your best off just installing from scratch. It really is easy, all i got is the R61 CD1 with SPLAT on it. Here are the steps:
1 - Make an ISO of it
2 - Put that on your computer.
3 - Started up VMWare server,
4 - Make a new image with 2 ethernet adapters or more
5 - Go through the installer (very very easy)
6 - Once rebooted, run 'sysconfig' and set up an IP Address on the same subnet as you LAN
7 - Install what ever packages you want (eg: Firewall-1 & SmartCenter is typical)
8 - Thats it...those are higher overview steps, im not going to go into detail.
9 - What I done in my LAB was i installed a couple SPLAT's and a couple Linux boxes...that is basically what you would need for CCSA...

If you guys really want i might post up a step by step newbie guide to setup SPLAT in VMWare similar to what they have in the Student Handbook for the Checkpoint Course.

Hi Synick,

I am newbie with CCSA here. I really need to setup a lab to play with NGX R65.
If you don't mind, it is possible for you to list out the steps to set up the lab for me?

Beside, i don't know some term using in here such as "SPLAT". So , please kindly
explain those words that seem hard for me to understand.

Thank You.

SPLAT stands for Secure Platform, which is the OS of Checkpoint.

Hello,

Has anyone been able to make the VMXNET driver for vmware work with SPLAT?
I've installed SPLAT as a vm, but was unable to install the vmware tools which i was informed was a requirement for the vmxnet adapter.
Has anyone been able to accomplish this yet for splat?

Thanks,

I don't think Vmware tools is necessary to run SPLAT.You can do without it for your CCSA/CCSE exam.
