I've had very few problems with upgrade_export/import just mack sure you run the upgrade checker and fix what it tells you too.

Always!! I really stinks when that great system that's been running for months throws the hard drive when you reboot after the upgrade!

Yes you can. You can also call in advance and ask to schedule a call back at the time you doing the upgrade.
